This little waif of a pug came into our rescue on Sunday, October 22, 2000. Cess is four years old and only weighs 9 pounds. As you can see from the pictures, Cess has a horrible skin condition, which is believed at this time to be a food allergy. She will be a little black pug with a white blaze on her chest if we can get her hair to grow back. Her muzzle is completely naked and so is her backside and tail. With little hair left with open  bleeding sores and scabs left on her sides. She has a little black hair left on her back and the outside of her legs.

She has very bad staph pyoderma. Her skin gives off a foul odor and is greasy to the touch. After a thorough vet exam and blood work, we discovered she also has elevated BUN and creatine levels, which may indicate kidney damage. Her ears are infected as well, and she has open sores on her body from the constant itching and scratching. Cess will be a long term foster as we try to figure out something that will work for her. She seems to be allergic to the world in general.

Her treatment has begun. She is on strong antibiotics and antihistamines to combat the staph and calm the itching. She will have medicated baths twice a week, daily ear washes, and a special diet of cooked venison and potatoes. We hope to be able to identify foods she is allergic to later on by adding one test food at a time. This is called an "elimination diet."

Cess has a long fight ahead of her to get well. The cost of her treatment will be very expensive as we try to find something this little girl can eat without having violent allergic reactions.

Cess needs your help to win this battle. If you would like to help Cess get well,

Pug Rescue of NC is starting a special fund for her veterinary care and testing. Please mark your donations for the "Cess Fund." We will be posting updates of her progress.

As always your donations are tax deductible, we are a 501 3 c non-profit organization

1 ST UPDATE

10/31/00 Halloween! And what a thing to have to do! Go to the DOCTOR! But Cess made a big hit all dressed up for Halloween. You can see her picture below in the drop down menu. We also got a bag of treats (but we have to save them till she's better before she can eat them).

The vet was really pleased with her progress so far. Her skin lesions have healed and she is beginning to grow some hair back. You can see in the picture the white around her muzzle. That's all new growth! Her coat is beginning to fill in some too.
Dr. Canady was amazed, and really surprised that today's retest showed much better results in BUN and Creatine levels! Her Albumin which was low at 2.1 last week, has now improved to 3.2. BUN dropped from 38 to 29 (still a bit high but great progress)! Creatine dropped from 2.3 to 1.4 and is now in the high normal range. Globulin dropped from 5.9 to 4.1 which means the skin infection is improving.
She is doing so well that there is no change of diet. We stay on the venison and potatoes diet, keep up with the same medications and baths, and we back in three weeks for another check on her progress.

2nd UPDATE!

11/21/00 Cess update
This is our next plan for action.

First of all, the vet could not believe how wonderful she looks...all that new hair, shiny coat, and weight gain. She now officially weighs 15.5 pounds. She asked me for the original pictures we took of her on the website for her files. I told her I would print them off for her. She feels the staph infection is over with, so we are off the Baytril except for a pulse dose on the weekends. I will give her 2 doses on Saturday and Sunday only for the next two weeks to see how she does. We are off the antihistamines too and save what is left for an allergic reaction. We will use those only as needed now.

She also pulled the Chlorhexidene shampoo. Said save that for future reactions as well. Her skin is still flaking a bit. She said that was seborrheic dandruff type stuff, and wanted to put her on a different shampoo. I asked about Nova Pearls Coal Tar, she said great, use that. I can cut back on the baths and just give them when I see the flaking dandruff.

She checked her ears...no bacterial infection, but there is some yeast in minor proportions. She said that could be from the long-term use of Baytril, and should clear up continuing to use the ear wash and dropping the heavy doses of antibiotic down. To summarize:

Stay on the venison potatoes diet only for two more weeks.
Stay on the 3V EFA supplement.
Drop the antibiotics to weekend doses for two more weeks.
Continue to use the ear wash
Change from Chorhexidene Shampoo to Nova Pearls
Reduce frequency of bathing to as needed.
Use antihistamines only as needed.
Watch for any increased itching or biting during this time.
If she doesn't relapse, we start the food trials in two weeks.
She can be spayed during this two weeks so that will be over with by the time we start the food trials.

12/01/2000
Cess was healthy enough to be spay and we are starting the food trials. Wish us luck.

February 18, 2001
First food trails were Nutro Natural dry kibble, mixed with Dr.Ballard lamb & Rice canned food.  Cess slowly gained weight in her foster home.  Black fur replaced the bare patches and bleeding sores. that covered most of her body.  With aggressive medical treatment and the love and care of her foster mom, her skin healed.  Cess began to glow again with personally and a life worth living.  By the time she was ready for adoption she had gained up to 15 pounds.  Cess remain our "Poster Child."  What we feared the most as a fledging rescue is what ultimately put us on the map.  Thanks to Cess and all the hearts she touched, we have been able to go on.
